My barrel is stamped (twice) ZZ, near the receiver, which that chart shows as being made in 1953 (and that Z was used in 1931). Another ( Remington Manufacture Dates) says a two letter code on the barrel reveals the year of manufacture. A good reblue and more polishing and it's a model 12 without a serial number or lettering for that matter. This website ( Remington Model 31 - Wikipedia) indicates the model 31 was made from 1931 to 1949. We know that they are a model 12 that someone "made" a front end for, from spare parts.Īs far as the receiver itself, a competent metal worker or gunsmith could file, buff and completely polish every bit of numbering and lettering off of a model 12 so it could not bee seen with the naked eye. Most of the knowledgable Winchester folks here have seen receiver extensions on model 12's without serial numbers, no big deal. Now, there were and still are receiver extensions which were not serialized, these were not put on guns from the factory, they are parts that made it out of the factory and were used by whoever acquired them to build front halves of model 12's.
